Mix – Mingle – Match: Find Your Scientific Soulmate at GOR’s Early Career Science Speed Dating

Our first GOR Science Speed Dating provides an opportunity for all early-career online researchers (i.e. PhD students) and practitioners (i.e. within their first 5 years in the online research industry) to get to know and connect with others in the field in a fun and engaging way. Especially for first-time visitors at GOR, the event offers a great informal and casual way to get to know other conference participants and to meet a diverse group of early career people from different backgrounds, disciplines, and institutions.

Participants will have the chance to engage in a series of five eight-minute one-on-one conversations to share their research, current work projects, interests and ideas.

How it works:

  1. Register for a spot at the Early Career Science Speed Dating via ConfTool (you can select this option while booking your GOR ticket).

  2. The organizers will review all registrations and then anonymously determine who will be meeting whom.

  3. At the event itself, each participant will be handed a “dating card” at the beginning, on which is listed in which round he or she has to be at which of the tables (numbered).

  4. At each table, both participants in turn will have the opportunity to pitch their research or current project before moving on to meet the next person.

  5. Did you particularly enjoy some conversations? Great! Mark up to two conversations which sparked your interest the most on your card. When all rounds are finished, you will be asked to return your dating cards to the organizers. After the conference, the organizers will check which interlocutors have “matched” with each other and draw a winning couple from all matching pairs. Both members of the winning match will receive a free conference ticket for next year’s GOR as well as each other’s email address to continue the conversation.

The Early Career Science Speed Dating will happen before the GOR Get Together and include free drinks.

When: Wednesday, 20 September 2023, 7 pm (right before the GOR Get Together)

Where: Caricatura Bar, Kassel (next to Kassel Main Station, Rainer-Dierichs-Platz 1, 34117 Kassel)

Admission: free  – but book your seat in advance via ConfTool is required, as seating is limited and we need to match you for your talks!

GOR 23: Call for Workshops

Dear Online Researcher,

for the General Online Research conference GOR 23 we are looking for workshop proposals.

GOR workshops take place on the day before the conference’s talks and presentations and are a great opportunity for conference attendees to learn about state of the art methods and applications in online research.

The GOR workshops aim at getting a hands-on experience with the latest tools (e.g., software or hardware), methods (e.g., data collection or analyses) and best practice (e.g., how to take advantage of recent developments).

The following topics are relevant for the GOR audience: online and mobile web surveys, data science, big data, smart data, political research, public opinion, political online communication, or online market research. Please note that the workshops are not the right place for plain sales presentations (although
workshops on commercial solutions are possible).

This year’s workshops will take place on September 20 (some in person and some online). Workshop duration should be 2.5 hours and language of instruction preferably English but German is possible for some workshops. As a token of appreciation, the conference fee for instructors will be waived.

Please submit your workshop outline by email to email@frederikfunke.net and include the following information:
– title
– instructor(s)
– target audience
– workshop description

– three course objectives

The deadline for workshop proposals is: 23 April 2023.

GOR is organized by the German Society for Online Research (DGOF, https://www.dgof.de/) since 1997. Each year more than 300 participants attend the conference to discuss current developments in online research and best practices for their work in industry and academia. With more than 100 presentations addressing various subtopics of online research, GOR provides intensive training and networking opportunities.

GOR 23 local partner and co-organizer: University of Kassel, Prof. Dr. Bettina Langfeldt

We look forward to receiving your workshop submission. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Dr. Frederik Funke
on behalf of the program committee
